EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY

Information and Communication Technology or simply ICT deals with the use of different technologies
like mobile phones, computer, telephones, internet, etc to locate, save, send and receive information.

ICT IN THE PHILIPPINES

ICT IN THE PILIPINAS!!

  • Philippines is the “ICT Hub of Asia”.
  • Huge growth of ICT related jobs around the country, one of which is call center or BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) centers.
  • According to 2013 edition of Measuring the Information Society by the International Telecommunication Union, there are 106.8 cellphones per 100 Filipinos in the year 2012.
  • In a data gathered by the Annual Survey of Philippines Business and Industries in 2010, the ICT industry shares 19.3% of the total employment population.
  • Time magazines declared Makati City, Philippines-Rank 1 as the “Selfiest Cities around the world” and Rank 9 is Cebu City.

RULES OF NETIQUETTE

Internet is really a huge help for people especially for students, like me. But internet can also be dangerous, crimes are also committed here and there are many threats in the internet such as malware, spam and phishing. Internet may be a useful tool for all of us but we need to be careful at all times, think before you click.

ROLES OF ICT

In EDSA Revolution

During martial law, radyo veritas, a 24-hour AM radio station operated by the Roman Catholic Church, because it served as the primary communication platform for the democratic opposition, it is the one that helped the people in their fight of EDSA People Power Revolution. If Radio Veritas was not there, it would be hard for people to communicate and make protest against Ferdinand Marcos.

In Million People March

While pork barrel scam is on going in the Philippines, many Filipinos used internet to show their anger by creating blogs, pages and memes to show that they want the PBS to stop. The Filipinos behind Power ng Pinoy, a TV Program in United States, created a Facebook event page where thousands of people joined. The #MillionPeopleMarch became trend in the PH and it is the first social media protest that succeed.

In Yolanda People Finder

During the typhoon yolanda, the People Finder is a vital tool for people across the globe to track the situation of their relatives. This proved to be successful and is now adapted by more organizations to help track relatives during calamity.

In EDSA DOS

People used text brigade, the fastest and cheapest way of relaying messages at that time. Filipinos began responding to text messages calling them to action. The revolution wouldn’t be successful without the mobile technology.

For me, ICT is not just about computer, cellphones or any other technology, it is one of the factors that changed our world and continously changes for a better one.

PS: Thanks to our teacher on empowerment technology! He teaches us very well and our first sem with him became great and fun!!!! HAAHAHAHAHA 😆
